Why I Love the Tricky Cases

A couple of weeks ago, I was having lunch with a few former colleagues. We were catching up, talking about our current work, and what truly excites us. When it was my turn, I shared something that seemed to surprise them:
I love the tricky cases.

You know the ones—the cases so complex they teeter on the edge of due process or litigation. The ones that leave everyone wondering, “Did we do everything we could for this child?” Those are the cases that energize me.

I’ve always been someone who notices everything. Some call it being detail-oriented. Others might say I’m hypervigilant. Either way, it means I spot what others miss—the one thing out of place, the overlooked clue, the misaligned puzzle piece. Over the years, I’ve turned that innate sensitivity into a professional superpower.

With nearly 20 years of experience across a wide range of schools and districts, I bring a broad and nuanced perspective to every team I join. I assess the situation, identify what’s already in place, uncover what’s missing, and recognize what might be there that doesn’t belong.

I thrive on collaboration—especially when the needs are unique, the team feels stuck, or the path forward is unclear. That’s when I get most excited. Because there’s always a way. Together, we can think outside the box, build a thoughtful and effective plan, and—most importantly—make sure it’s practical and sustainable for everyone involved.

At the end of the day, my motivation is simple: If there’s a child who needs us to bring our best, to dig deep, and to work smart—then that’s the work I want to be doing. Every time.
